Fall in Yellowstone
and Grand Tetons National Parks brings a chill to the air while the sun
still yields its warmth.
The green
of summer like many of the tourists have disappeared, replaced by the
glowing yellows, rusts and browns of autumn. Wildlife too responds to the
changing seasons by putting a winter coat and carrying on with the
business of creating the next generation. The parks
are the premier North American wildlife photography locations south of the
Canadian border. The variety and abundance of wildlife, along with the
ease with which they may be photographed against magnificent mountain and
fall color backdrops make them the ideal photographer's paradise.
Grand Teton National Park
In the Tetons portion of this workshop, emphasis
will be focus primarily on landscapes. Mornings are crisp and
clear, making first light ideal for spectacular photographic opportunities
as mountain peaks

towering above cotton-candy clouds are reflected in the
mirror-like surface of lakes and streams. Barns, corrals, and settler’s
cabins nestled among groves of golden aspens glow in the morning sunlight.
The Snake River, shrouded in morning mist, will be occupied with bull
moose sporting full racks. In the park we will travel to the best spots to
shoot moose and mule deer. Other prime shooting locations include Oxbow
Bend, Jenny Lake, and the Snake River Overlook among others.
Yellowstone National Park
While in Yellowstone we will be staying in the park at the
Lake Yellowstone Hotel. There’s
no better time of year to photograph the Park’s huge numbers large
mammals.
The haunting bugling of rutting elk and the rattle of antlers locked in
rutting combat can be heard from all sides. And pronghorn, preoccupied
with harem defense, allow careful photography from the sidelines.
Grizzly and black bears roam the
Park in search of that last morsel before beginning their long winter nap.
Along with park's special wildlife we will photography its surreal
geothermal landscapes including geysers, bubbling paint pots,
fumaroles
and mineral terraces and a number of the parks spectacular waterfalls.
In the Madison River
area we will spend an entire day
photographing the territorial
clashes between bull elk during mating season.
The picturesque Norris Geyser Basin and the
mineral terraces at Mammoth Hot Springs will also be visited, not only for
their geothermal wonders but also for the pronghorn and coyotes that
reside here. Another day will find us photographing in the Hayden Valley,
known for its herds of elk and bison, and the photogenic Yellowstone River
slicing through rock formations to form two majestic waterfalls in
Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon. During the evening hours we will explore the
SW shores of Lake Yellowstone near Grant's Village prime bull elk have
gathered their harems and defend them against all other challengers.
