After having WAY too much fun as guest speaker for the 2008 Flowers of Monet workshop I am pleased to announce that

DEWITT JONES

is returning for the 2010 Flowers of Monet I workshop. (One workshop only.)

Dewitt Jones is one of America's top professional photographers with a career stretching over twenty years. As a motion picture director, he had two films nominated for Academy Awards before he was thirty. Twenty years as a freelance photographer for National Geographic earned him a reputation as a world class photojournalist.

Since 1986, as a columnist for Outdoor Photographer magazine, Has had explored those aspects of photography that had always been the most important to nature photographers -- What is creativity?, What is beauty?, What are the real reasons we photograph?, What is the spirit behind the images we create?, What are the lessons we learn from photography that not only change our images but also change our lives?

“Photography has been the delight of my life. It’s never been an end in itself, however, just a means to an end. The end is an attitude, a posture toward the world filled every moment with reverence and wonder. I haven't achieved that end yet. Probably never will. But the moments with my camera when I've touched it prove to me that it exists and confirm both my direction and my commitment. Those moments are pure magic. They are really the reason I photograph, and why I will continue to as long as I have eyes to see.”

Dewitt is recognized as a world class lecturer. His knowledge of the creative process, his relaxed and genuine style, and his ability to communicate make his presentations truly outstanding.

Claude Monet is considered the founding member of the impressionist movement in painting. Impressionist art is based on the use of color, which has to "draw" the motive without resorting to line. Monet used the effects of light and color in order to capture the changing conditions of his subjects, transforming Nature into art.

This intensive workshop will photographically follow in the footsteps of Monet as we use

advanced photographic techniques to turn "reality" into art.

Like Monet, who studied his subjects intently, planned his paintings and worked hard to achieve his results, you will spend six days immersed in the beauty of the flowers and gardens of the Monet estate. Time enough to study, visualize and create impressionistic and abstract images of nature.

Painting - Jardin de Monet, les iris

At the gateway to Normandy and only 75 km from Paris, the village of Giverny (pronounced Jee-va-nyee), the Monet Estate and the surrounding Normandy country side will be the setting for this ten day workshop. It is an area incredibly rich in color, flowers, landscapes, and ancient architecture creating unlimited photographic opportunities. Our days will be spent learning and applying advance techniques and unique tools to the art of flower and landscape photography. Using elements of light, time, focus, lens selection, filters, depth of field, and motion, you will be able to use these techniques in the field in order to create visually stunning abstract and impressionistic images of your own making.

VIEWS OF THE MONET GARDENS:

As with all Mark's workshops, professionally-mentored field work is emphasized supported by lectures, critiques, tech talks and question and answer sessions. Almost every day is spent in the field to provide opportunities to work on your art. Plenty of one-on-one time with Mark is built in so that he can provide on-the-spot guidance via interpretive questions and personal experience as you work on finding and developing your personal vision. Participants must be familiar with all the operations of their cameras along with a good, working understanding of the principles of composition, basic image design and metering.
